Week 1: Small Worlds

Welcome to BA1002
This is our tutorial blog and it's where most of our interactions will take place during this course. The video below introduces you to the online "hubs" around which our virtual BA classroom is structured - LearnJCU, this blog, and the BA1002 facebook group. The video also introduces some of the staff that will be supporting you throughout the course.

Blogging & Participation
For the first two weeks I'll be creating blog posts (like this one) putting them on this blog and asking you to make comments below.

Then from week three, until week 8, you'll be taking control of the blog. You'll be asked to use the lecture materials and readings to create your own blog posts and comment on other student's work. This is the "blog assessment" - worth 20%,  (we'll talk about it some more in week 2).

In weeks 9, 10, 11 & 12 I will take over posting again and you'll be asked to make comments and discuss the lectures/posts/readings/assessments. Your comments, on my posts, constitute 10% of your "participation grade" (there are more details on participation grades in your subject outlines).

Week 1 task
  1. View the week 1 lecture (on LearnJCU) and complete the week 1 readings.
  2. If this is your first semester at uni, make sure you complete the ETC! orientation module
  3. If you are a continuing student leave three study/surviving university tips below (make sure you enter your name into the "comment as: ..." box).
  4. Then watch the documentary (linked below) and leave a comment introducing yourself to the class.
  5.
This film explains  "6 degrees of separation" and small worlds theory, as well as exploring some some of the reasons why we study networks.

Welcome to BA1002

  2. Hey,
My name is Rainy, I am currently doing a Joint Degree, (Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts). I have completed 9 subjects in total but never did this core subject for some weird reason :P.
Any ways, this subject looks good :):)

    Three Tips
: Just READ, don't be a lazzy fool, just read, read and read, IT WORKS!
: Set up a way to study / have notes for exams, I personally use 3 massive cork boards on my wall. At the end of the week I write the key points for all my subjects and place it on that cork board. This works for me because I see it every day. Find what works for you.
: Get a diary but most importantly use it, don't be a lazzy foooool!

Anyways enjoy your day/ night :):):):P

    My Tips
    1. Repeat, repeat, repeat your work so it's imbedded in your head.

    3. Coffee. An endless supply of coffee or have a rewards card for your coffee shop as its an essential

Great tips - especially the coffee one. I'm in the last 6 months of my Phd right now & I basically look like this http://blog.listentoyourgut.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/iv-coffee1.png :D

Yes I sure was in your class last semester.
Coffee is the greatest to study and you have the right idea with the picture from that link. 6 months to go, thats awesome. Alot of hard work I'm guessing, along with the coffee drip.

  6. Hello all,
My name is Storme Black, I am Midway into my double major in Political Science and English, for me the greatest study tips would be 1. Drink plenty of water all day everyday, as one of the oldest substances on this planet it has the greatest benefits for the brain. 2. Work out a study and time management plan that is unique to you and most importantly WORKS for you and 3. Try to keep your spirits and motivation high throughout the whole semester (which can be difficult) so chill every now and again!

  7. Nhamirri Bukmak (Which means "hi all" from North East Arnhem Land, NT). My name is Melanie Mununggurr and I am starting my first year as a BA student. I've completed one year of a Bachelor of Education, but last year realised my true passion lies with preserving and maintaining my culture and land. So I am now studying a double major; Indigenous and Environmental studies.

My surviving Uni tips are ...

    1. (Funnily enough)Build a network! One of people and resources you can talk with and use often, to bounce ideas and information off, and offer encouragement, support and motivation.

    2. Make sure that before you sit down to study, you're in the right frame of mind and rid yourself of any major distractions. E.g. phone, facebook, tv.

3.Set yourself mini goals, with mini rewards. E.g.a chocolate or a 10 minute walk for completing a reading or two

    Good luck this semester everyone

  8. Hi Melanie,

Welcome, & I'm really glad you followed your passion, that's a good choice of major to do some awesome things with :)

Your study tips are great, especially no. 2 - I'm terrible at this & constantly getting distracted when something rings or pings or beeps at me, when I'm supposed to be writing :D

  9. Hi all,

My name is Corinna. Sorry for the late comment I've been majorly sick. I'm doing a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology & Social Work). My three advise tips are:

    - Organize, organize, organize. If you get stuck on your essays take a break to go through and update your diary. I spend lots of time going over my diary. Or planning/organizing the essay structures.
    - Don't spend too much time on your research, when the information your reading is interesting that's great but it can easily distract you from your purpose, remember to keep on track, know what you're looking for and only spend the minimal amount of time necessary to gather the material you need for your essay.
    - Relax. Just be consistent with doing your work and you should be right.

  10. Hello all,

    My name is Kate.

I apologize I'm a bit late to the party, there was a mix up with my enrollment!

I'm studying a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology; I'm a 23 year old from Melbourne and have previously been to uni, but illness and a lack of determination for certain subject materials got in the way; then my parents both got sick and it was the wrong place and the wrong time.

Now I'm back on board and super excited to begin!

    My tips include:

    - Maccas is NOT a uni food - it makes you feel pretty ordinary and tired, so don't eat it!
    - Tired of starting over? Stop giving up.
    - Breath when times are tough; these are only temporary problems. :)

Apologies if this is a re-post as I can't see my original on here. my name is Jessica Mcgimpsey, I'm studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English. My study tips are....
    1. Don't take on more than you can handle - I originally started uni full time studying 4 subjects and had to go back to full time work, needless to say that did not end well. I'm now studying only two and it's a lot easier.
    2. No distractions while studying, no phones etc. I don't even like using computers when studying as they are full of distractions.
    3. Never leave anything until the last minute, get assignments done as early as you can. If you think you have enough time to get it finished you generally won't.

  14. Hi Everyone,

I'm Narelle, sorry my post is so late but unfortunately the settlement on my new house was delayed and I ended up moving in week 1! I have got the internet up and running now so it's time to play catch up! I live in Townsville and changed from BEd to BA this semester and it's my first semester externally.

    My study tips:

    1. Sleep! Always include time for adequate sleep and try to have a regular bed and wake up time.
    2. Keep up with the work every week so that when exams come the study is already familiar
3.Look after your health and well being. I learn much better when I'm happy and well and sometimes that means a night off study.

Also don't move house in week 1! I am currently trying to follow my own tips and everyone else's to get back on track!
